Wheeling, W.Va.—The Wheeling Jesuit baseball team split a doubleheader at the JB Chambers I-470 Complex on Saturday afternoon against the conference’s top ranked Seton Hill University Griffins. During the twinbill, the Cardinals received three outstanding pitching performances as they dropped game one by a score of 3-1 and bounced back for a game two 3-0 shutout victory.
With the split, the Cardinals improved to 11-14 overall and 6-9 in conference play while the Griffins moved to 21-7 overall and 13-3 in league play.
In game one, starting pitcher Brenden Gillies received the loss, hurling five complete innings and allowing five hits, three walks and two runs while striking out nine batters. Michael McDonald relieved Gilles of his duties, throwing the final two innings and only allowed one hit and one run.
Offensively, the Cardinals scattered seven hits around the yard as Patrick Ammar led with a 2-for-3 performance, including a single and a double. Corey Hull, Malachi Murphy, Robbie Davia, Jason Troy and Tom Charles all added hits.
Seton Hill started the scoring in the second inning and added runs in the fifth and seventh innings.
In the nightcap, Jordan Kraus earned the complete game shutout victory, allowing only six hits and one walk while striking out eight batters. Jesuit scored three runs in the fourth inning on three hits, a fielding error and a hit batsman. Kraus led-off the inning with a single to left center field in a sacrifice bunt by Ammar sent him to second. Davia reached on a Seton Hill fielding error, which plated Kraus, and Jordan Medley was hit by a pitch. Luke Starre followed with a single through the left side. Charles drove in two runs with a single to right field.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Sunday, April 1 against Seton Hill at the JB Chambers I-470 Complex beginning at 1 p.m.
