Cameron Shines on Homecoming Night

Big time fun in small town America! If you happened to listen to the Ovathletics.com Streamcast the other day you would have heard us mention how spectacular the setting is at Cameron on a Friday night in the fall. When you think about high school football in West Virginia this is the picture that comes to mind. With backdrop of the changing leaves the Cameron Dragons hosted the Valley Lumberjacks.

Defense turned out to be the name of the game, at least in the first half. Outside of some nifty running from Valley’s Gavin Derby the Lumberjacks offense was held in check by a stout Cameron defense.

Cameron opened the scoring up in the first quarter with a Colson Wichterman TD run. The game was later knotted at 6 in the 2nd quarter. Then Cole Burkett scored for the Dragons to make it 12-6 Dragons.

Valley, though was up to the task and drove down the field late in the half to get a 1st and goal. After gaining some ground on 1st down, they were faced with a 2nd and goal from the 1-yard line. The Dragons stopped the Lumberjacks causing them to use their second timeout. The Lumberjacks then turned to a full house backfield almost beckoning the wishbone offense from the Valley good old days.

Cameron again stopped Valley short of the goal line causing Valley to take their third and final timeout of the half. With less than 30 seconds to go, the Dragons again stuffed the Lumberjacks before they could get over the goal line. With no timeouts remaining the Lumberjacks raced to the line to get another play off before the half. Cameron again stopped the Lumberjacks in the backfield to turn Valley away from inside the 1-yard line for 3 straight plays. Making the score 12-6 in Cameron’s favor at the half.

The halftime festivities included the crowning of Annie Martin as Cameron’s Homecoming Queen. It was nice to see her sister Megan and her friend Emilie in attendance to cheer her on. Megan and Emilie were former students and athletes of the new owners of Ohio Valley Athletics, and it was great catching up with them.

The 2nd half began with the Dragons breathing fire. On the first play of the half Colson Wichterman hit Burkett on a long pass for the touchdown. Burkett then took the end around for the conversion to push the Cameron lead to 20-6.

Cameron then recovered a Mason Debolt onside kick. The very next play Wichterman hit Burkett again, this time down the left sideline for the touchdown. Wichterman was successful with the 2-point conversion to extend the lead to 28-6.

Cameron’s defense was up to the task again forcing the Lumberjacks to punt on their next possession. The Dragon offense was still breathing fire as Wichterman hit J Ross for a long pass that put the Dragons in a goal to go situation. J Ross ended the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to make the score 34-6.

Peyton Neely scored late in the 3rd and with the extra point being good it extended the Dragon’s lead to 41-6. That ended the scoring for both teams, keeping the Dragons undefeated at 7-0, while the Lumberjacks dropped to 4-3.

We, at Ovathletics.com would like to take a second to thank everyone at Cameron for being so welcoming. Coaches, Administrators, and others really gave us the first-class treatment while we were there. This is absolutely a fantastic place to enjoy a high school football game.
