MORGANTOWN, W.Va.– West Virginia University basketball coach Bob Huggins has announced the signing of Gary Browne to a national letter of intent for the 2011-12 academic year.
Browne, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound guard, is from Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, but moved to Florida for his senior year and is attending Arlington Country Day School in Jacksonville, Fla. This past season, he averaged 11 points, 7.5 assists and 4.0 steals per game in leading Arlington Country Day to a 23-2 record. Browne shot 83 percent from the free throw line and 39 percent from 3-point range. Arlington Country Day, coached by Rex Morgan, finished as the No. 16-ranked boys team in the country according to USA Today, and was No. 17 by MaxPreps.com.
“We’re certainly excited for Gary to play for coach Huggins and to attend West Virginia University,” says Morgan. “He’s a tremendous on-the-ball defender and is a player who makes his teammates better. Gary will be one of the hardest working guys that coach Huggins will have on his team.”
Browne played on the Puerto Rico national team since he was 14 years old. Last year at the FIBA U18 championship in San Antonio, Texas, he averaged 11.8 points per game for Puerto Rico. He attended St. Francis School in Carolina, Puerto Rico, as a sophomore and junior before transferring to Arlington Country Day. As a junior, he averaged nearly 22 points per game.
“Gary gives us a true point guard in this class,” says Huggins. “He has gained valuable experience with the Puerto Rico national team. He could remind some of former Mountaineer great Darris Nichols in his ability to run the team and to deliver the ball to the right people at the right time.”
Browne joins Aaron Brown (Darby, Pa., Penn Wood High), Pat Forsythe (Brunswick, Ohio, Brunswick High), Jabarie Hinds (Mount Vernon, N.Y., Mount Vernon High), Tommie McCune (Saginaw, Mich., Saginaw High), Keaton Miles (Dallas, Texas, Lincoln High) and Dominique Rutledge (Newark, N.J., Western Texas College) as signees for the 2011-12 season.
