The Pittsburgh Pirates announced on Tuesday that they have granted left-handed pitcher Joe Beimel his unconditional release.
Beimel, 34, was designated for assignment on August 23rd to make room for right-hander Ross Ohlendorf on the active roster.
After posting a 1.42 ERA in eight games in the month of July, Beimel was scored upon in five of his last nine games this month, allowing eight runs in 5.2 innings of work.
The move was rather tough for Manager Clint Hurdle who knew Beimel since he was 17-years-old.
“There are guys that have a bigger impact than numbers present,“ Hurdle said last week. “Joe was one of those guys. Joe was a much needed addition to our club in spring training, not just trying to bring stability to the bullpen from the left side. But to also to help some young men to grow up in some areas, when they’re not pitching, in the clubhouse, trying to prepare, how to perform. He had some intangible qualities to him that we’re very valuable to us.”
In 35 games with the Bucs this season, Beimel went 1-1 with a 5.33 ERA.
