On Target

This weekend also saw some archery action out at Cameron High School. We do like to cover archery here at Ohio Valley Athletics, but understand some people are still grasping the concept of what goes on at these events. They award top 5 individuals for middle school girls, boys, and the top 5 individual high school girls and boys. The top 3 middle school and top 3 high school teams.

For this particular tournament they had flights (rounds of shooting) every hour from 9 am until the last flight at 5 pm. Each round has 40 shooters on 20 targets. They share 2 shooters per target. They shoot 3 rounds of 5 arrows at 10 meters and then 3 rounds of 5 arrows at 15 meters. The highest possible score is 300.

In order to determine the team score, they take the top 12 scores for each team and add them up; however, there must be at least 4 of each gender. So, if the top 10 are all boys, the #9 and 10 boys don’t count and they have to go down the list to find the top 4 girl scores.

Archery is such a great sport. It let’s athletes from all different types of backgrounds compete and have fun. These are all day events, but do not require archers to be there all day. They shot their round and are free to leave. Some archers do multiple tournaments in a day. Some can even win multiple tournaments in the same day. One of the ways a kid can get started with archery is in the physical education class, as most school now have it as part of the physical education curriculum.
