Over 1,000 Athletes Compete at WJU’s Bill Van Horne Invitational

WHEELING – The Bethany College track and field teams began its outdoor schedule Saturday at the 23-team Wheeling Jesuit Invitational and registered several top five finishes, including one first place and one new school record.

The Bison men scored 26.5 points to finish 14th overall, while the women’s team totaled seven points to tie for 18th.

The lone first place came in the men’s long jump, where freshman Gregg Williams’ (Washington, D.C.) best jump of 21-9 was the top effort among 33 competitors and seven inches further than the second place finisher.

Bethany’s record book saw a change in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase. Freshman Cory Yarrington (Berkeley Springs, W.Va.) finished third overall and his time of 10:27.84 shattered the previous standard that was set by Danny Orwa in 2007 by more than 34 seconds.

The Bison’s field events had a strong day in addition to Williams’ win. Freshman Ben Gregg (Eighty Four, Pa./Bentworth) earned third place in the javelin with a throw of 159-7 an junior Seth Myers (Valley Grove, W.Va./Wheeling Park) finished in the top 10 in a pair of events, including tied for fifth in the shot put (41-8) and 10th in the discus (131-5).

The final top showing for BC was the men’s 4×100 relay of sophomore Ricky Dixon (Struthers, Ohio), senior Daniel Farray (Queens, N.Y./Msgr. McClancy), sophomore Ed Holmes (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) and sophomore Raymear Pinchom (Willingboro, N.J.). The foursome raced to a seventh place finish with a time of 45.71.

For the women, senior Desiree Finley (Nanticoke, Pa./Hanover Area) had the top finish by taking fourth in the 400 Hurdles with a time of 1:08.61. She also led off the for 4×100 Relay and along with junior Kaitlyn Black (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley), freshman Hayley Acree (Middlebourne, W.Va./Tyler Consolidated) and freshman Paige Prato (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland), the team placed seventh (52.86).

In the field events, junior Cassie Allen (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) finished in a tie for 10th in the high jump by clearing 4-7.5.

The Bison will be back in action next Saturday (April 2) at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational.
