Perhaps Kevin Correia’s first home start of the season was just a blip on the radar. Last season, Correia went 10-3 on the road, and just 2-8 at home. Despite his strong performance against Colorado at PNC Park, Correia was unable to duplicate the same success tonight against the Reds. Back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning were the dagger for the Reds en route to their 6-1 victory.
Correia gave up five runs over seven innings, including the back-to-back home runs to Zack Cozart and Drew Stubbs. According to Correia however, they were just two pitches that got away from him.
“It was a 3-1 pitch the first one that he hit out and with the guys they have, I had to throw a strike,” Correia said. “The next pitch was just a bad pitch that he hit out.”
The Pirates offense was unable to continue their success they had on their road trip as Johnny Cueto was able to keep them honest all night in his complete game victory, his fourth of the season. Aside from a Pedro Alvarez sacrifice fly, the Pirates were kept off the board as they could only put together seven hits on the evening.
“Since he’s (Cueto) implemented this new little tuck, we haven’t had much of anything against him in awhile,” Hurdle said. “We aren’t the first team he’s buzzed down. He came in with a 1.39 ERA, the numbers are legit.”
The Pirates will look to get back on track tomorrow as James McDonald (1-1, 2.97 ERA) for the Pirates (11-15) and Mike Leake (0-3, 6.65 ERA) for the Reds (13-12). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET.
