In another great start the Pirates come up short in a 1-0 extra inning loss. In the first game against the Mets in a four game series, the Pirates took New York ten innings before losing on a walk off hit by Nick Evans. The game was also the third extra innings game in the past four days the Pirates played.
The game was quiet for the most part as both starting pitchers allowed no more than five runs. Pirates starter James McDonald went eight innings allowing five runs and two walks. McDonald struck out four and got the Pirates in range of a win.
But the Pirates offense came up short again, as they were held scoreless in the game. Mets starter Dillon Gee held the Pirates to five runs though six innings. The Mets bullpen improved on Gee’s start holding the Pirates to one hit the remaining of the game.
The Pirates got close to scoring a run in the tenth, but a bad bunt cut short a much needed run. Andrew McCutchen who lead off double put the Pirates into scoring position, but a bunt by Neil Walker, intended to be a sacrifice, allowed Mets catcher Josh Thole to pick off McCutchen as he was headed toward third. The ball was bunted in the dirt not a yard in front of Thole for the easy pick off at third. After that the Pirates went down in order.
Reliever Chan Ho Park came in the bottom of the tenth and allowed a pair of hits to give the Mets their 1-0 win over the Pirates. Ruben Tejata doubled down the line to put himself into good position to win the game. The following batter, Nick Evans, singled to left field giving Tejata enough room to score.
Park was charged with the loss in the game, his third of the year.
