Steubenville’s Liz Repella & seniors play final game at WVU Coliseum

MORGANTOWN – The West Virginia women’s basketball team will salute its five seniors on Monday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. for its final regular-season game against St. John’s.

Seniors Korinne Campbell, Vanessa House, Sarah Miles, Madina Ali and Liz Repella will play their final game on the WVU Coliseum court. The Mountaineers (21-8, 7-8 BIG EAST) look to bounce back from a 67-58 defeat at Rutgers on Saturday.

Repella and Ali are atop the scoring leaders to the Mountaineers as each averages over 13 points per game. Miles rounds out the top-three scorers and leads the team with 89 assists. Campbell enters the game after having a double-figure scoring performance in the last outing and rounds out the top-five scorers for WVU. House offers a spark off the bench as she has hit 19 3-point shots this season.

The Red Storm (20-8, 9-6 BIG EAST) enter Monday’s game after defeating Pitt at home on Saturday, 72-63. The win was St. John’s second consecutive win as it took a 57-46 decision at Villanova on Feb. 22. The Red Storm are 4-3 in BIG EAST play on the road, having defeated Seton Hall, Providence, USF and Villanova, but lost at Louisville, No. 11/10 Notre Dame and No. 23/24 Marquette, ironically, all teams WVU had the same outcome with.

Sophomore guard Shenneika Smith has stepped up for the Red Storm in the scoring column as she averages 13.3 points per game in all 28 starts. Behind Smith, Da’Shena Stevens, who led St. John’s in its last win over Pitt with 15 points, averages 12.4 points per game and leads the Red Storm in crashing the boards, averaging 6.5 rebounds a game. Sophomore guard Amanda Burakoski leads the BIG EAST Conference in accuracy from beyond the arc as she shoots 44.4 percent from 3-point range, making 40-of-90 this season.

The Mountaineers lead 17-4 in the all-time series with St. John’s, dating back to Jan. 21, 1996. WVU has won 10 of the last 11 outings, including the last five straight. The last game with St. John’s was decided by four points (54-50) and the win prior (in 2009) was decided by only two points (63-61). WVU has only lost to St. John’s one time in Morgantown, a 61-55 defeat at the Morgantown High Gym on Jan. 15, 2000.

The game will air live on ESPN2 and has been designated Fan Appreciation night.
