Fresh off of many spectacular swims at the OVAC Bill Brubaker Swimming Championship, local swimmers on the West Virginia side have prepared the past two weeks for the WVSSAC Region 1 Swimming Championship hosted by Brooke High School.

The high school swim season is winding down, exhaustion has set in, and swimmers are smiling with anticipation of taper season around the corner. This weekend will define the 2023 WVSSAC Swimming Championship.

Every coach and swimmer had to contemplate what would be their best events to score on the state level as entries were submitted earlier in the week. Then the wait begins. Last night the entries for all 4 Regions were released at the same time. The swimmers peaked with one eye to see what their main competition was swimming, and coaches started counting placement of each of their swimmers.

Additional swimmers to watch on Saturday that could make a showing on the all Region 1 team include Abie Riedel and JulieAnne Humpee from Wheeling Central, Ella McCullough and Lyla Horvath from Brooke, Abby Heilman and Ava Sunseri from Wheeling Park.

Local boy swimmers that also begin their quest to the 2023 WVSSAC Championship are highlighted by:

Quade Harris from Parkersburg South seeded 1st 100 Free and 100 Back.

Dennis Ramsay from Parkersburg seeded 1st in the 200 IM and the 500 Free.

Other swimmers to look out for Saturday during the Region 1 Championship are Lake Embrey and Christian Hammer from Morgantown, Ryan Richardson, Anthony Ott and Connor Roberts from Parkersburg South, and Jackson Kiminski from Wheeling Park.

When the water settles at Brooke High School and the teams return home, all swimmers and coaches will continue to refresh their phones waiting for the results from each Region to be submitted.  Quotes like “will Region 4 just submit their results!” will be heard.  By the end of the evening the 2023 WVSSAC Swimming Championship will be seeded and taper season begins.
