Thompson Shuts Down Hoyas

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 8, 2011) – Fueled by a stellar performance from redshirt freshman lefty Marshall Thompson in his first career BIG EAST start, the West Virginia University baseball team defeated Georgetown, 4-3, on Friday evening at Hawley Field.

After getting in a jam in the top of the first inning and allowing two runs, Thompson (4-0) settled down and went 7.2 innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs, while striking out 10 Georgetown batters.

Freshman right-hander Ryan Tezak picked up his second save, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing two hits, while striking out two. Charles Steinman (1-3) took the loss for the Hoyas, allowing four runs on six hits in six innings. Steinman also struck out eight.

The Mountaineers (18-14, 4-3) scored four runs on six hits with no errors, while Georgetown (18-14, 1-6) scored 3 runs on six hits with one error.

Georgetown got off to a quick start in the top of the first, loading the bases and scoring two runs. Justin Leeson scored on a fielder’s choice to third by Sean Lamont. Mike Garza then scored while LaMont was involved in a run-down between first and second base that ended the inning.

The Mountaineers then scored three runs on three hits to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first. Senior Justin McDavid singled up the middle, redshirt junior Dan DiBartolomeo was then hit by a pitch and redshirt senior Jeremy Gum walked to load the bases. Sophomore Chris Rasky followed with a first pitch single to center field that scored McDavid and DiBartolomeo. Senior Kevin Griffin, in his first at-bat back from injury, singled through the left side to score Gum.

WVU added a fourth run in the bottom of the second off a bloop single to left field by redshirt senior Grant Buckner that plated sophomore Brady Wilson to take a 4-2 lead.

Georgetown was able to the tying run in scoring position in the top of the eighth, but was only able to get one run out of the inning as Georgetown left two men on base when Tezak struck out Dan Capeless.

Seven WVU batters had at least one hit, while Rasky finished with two RBIs. Buckner and Griffin each had an RBI as well.

For the Hoyas, Lamont went 1-for-4 with two RBIs, while Garza batted 1-for-2 with two runs.

The two squads will be back in action tomorrow with the first pitch at 3 p.m.
