The Pittsburgh Pirates today named outfielder Andrew Lambo their minor league Player-of-the-Year and Tyler Glasnow their minor league Pitcher-of-the-Year for the 2013 season.  The announcement was made by Larry Broadway, Pirates’ Director of Minor League Operations.

Lambo hit a combined .282 (125-for-444) with 24 doubles, five triples, 32 home runs, 99 RBI, and a .574 slugging percent- age in 120 games between Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis. He led all Pirates minor leaguers with 32 home runs and 99 RBI, which was the most homers by a Pirates farmhand since Brad Eldred hit 38 in 2004. Lambo began the year with Altoona, where he became the first player in Curve history to hit for the cycle in the 15-year history of the team on April 9 at Akron. He also finished tied for fifth among all minor leaguers with his 32 home runs.

“Andrew has overcome a lot of adversity over the last few years and showed up this year in Spring Training determined to take the next step in his career,” said Broadway. “He did that and much more to earn a promotion from Altoona to Indianapolis then Pittsburgh, where he is doing everything he can to impact that club down the stretch.”

Glasnow went 9-3 with a 2.18 ERA in 24 starts while spending the entire season with Single-A West Virginia, which tied a club record with 82 wins while making the playoffs for the third time in the nine-year history of the club. He also finished the 2013 campaign with 164 strikeouts, which was the most by a Pirates minor leaguer since Tom Gorzelanny fanned 167 in 2004. The 20-year-old righthander also broke Will Inman’s West Virginia Power club record of 134 strikeouts from 2006 while his 164 strikeouts led all South Atlantic League pitchers and ranked fourth in all of minor league baseball.

Glasnow, who was named to the South Atlantic League’s post-season All-Star team, also tossed 11.0 consecutive hitless innings to end the regular season.

The Pirates selected Glasnow in the fifth round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft from Hart (CA) High School.

“Tyler has worked extremely hard since we drafted him two years ago,” said Broadway. “He continues to want to get better every day and puts in the effort to do so. He had a really nice season under the lights for the first time this year while helping the West Virginia club to a playoff berth.”
