West Liberty Football recruits 15 High School Seniors, Two from St. Clairsville

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – West Liberty University head football coach Roger Waialae has announced the signing of 15 high school seniors to NCAA Division II letters-of-intent as the Hilltoppers prepare for their first season as members of the Mountain East Conference.

Eleven of the newcomers are targeted for the offensive side of the ball. The signing class includes six offensive linemen, three linebackers, two running backs, two wide receivers, a quarterback and a defensive lineman.

“We went pretty heavy on the offensive line,” Waialae said, “but that was an area where we felt we needed to develop some depth. My staff did a good job of closing the deal with several guys we think can help us there along with some quality kids we had targeted at other positions. This shapes up as a pretty good group.”

The shortened pre-season camp now in effect for NCAA Division II programs makes it difficult for a freshman to hit the field in his first season at the collegiate level but Waialae isn’t ruling anything out for this class.

“With only about 2 1/2 weeks of camp, it is a pretty steep learning curve for the high school guys who weren’t here in the spring,” Waialae said. “That doesn’t mean it can’t be done. If a guy comes in here and shows us he’s physically and mentally ready to play at this level, he’ll play.”

The 15 high school recruits join the 12 collegiate and prep school transfers who came aboard over the Christmas break to form another solid group of newcomers for a Hilltopper program that is coming off its seventh winning season in the past eight years.

“We also have some other kids who have signed with us that we can’t announce yet due to NCAA paperwork requirements,” Waialae said, “so we should have right around 100 guys in the program in the fall. We’re really looking forward to the competition.”

The Hilltoppers will open the 2013 season with a Sept. 7 trip to Salisbury, N.C. to take on Catawba University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
