WHEEELING, WV, Oct. 4, 2010 \u2014 On Saturday, Oct. 23, Wheeling Jesuit University will induct three new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame at a 10 a.m. brunch, held in the Erickson Alumni Center. <\/p>\n
The ceremony is part of the annual fall homecoming celebration for students, friends, family and alumni. Weekend events begin at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22 and continue through brunch Sunday, Oct. 24.Hall of Fame honorees include:\u00a0<\/p>\n
*\u00a0Mandy Yustak Turnbull of\u00a0Mt. Lebanon, Pa., a 1997 graduate and women’s basketball two-time All-WVIAC selection, broke five school records, and scored 1,230 career points.<\/p>\n
*\u00a0Craig Buell of Huntington, W.Va., a 1998 graduate and men’s cross country NAIA National Championship qualifier, four-time All-WVIAC first-team and two-time WVIAC Conference Champion.<\/p>\n
*\u00a0Matt Staley of\u00a0Florence, Ky., a 2000 graduate and men’s swimming seven-time NCAA All-American, two-time Academic All-American and WJU record holder in four events.<\/p>\n
Turnbull came to Wheeling Jesuit from Pittsburgh, Pa. where she graduated from Carlynton High School, and was a member of the Wheeling Jesuit women\u2019s basketball program from 1993 \u2013 1997.\u00a0As a Lady Cardinal, she was part of the WVIAC Tournament championship team, regular season championship team and the National Tournament team. Turnbull was a two-time All-WVIAC player and a member of the winningest team in Lady Cardinal history. She set five school records and finished her career with 1,230 points.\u00a0Turnbull graduated from WJU with a bachelor of art’s degree in psychology. She earned a master’s degree in education and is certified to teach elementary education. Turnbull resides in Mt. Lebanon, Pa., with her husband Graham and their four children: Theron, Marian, Lilah and Rainiah.<\/p>\n
Buell came to Wheeling Jesuit from Huntington, W.Va., where he ran cross country and track for the Huntington High from 1990 – 1994. He won All-State honors in cross country in 1993.\u00a0Buell was a member of the Cardinal cross country and track and field teams from 1994 \u2013 1998, where he earned WVIAC All-Conference honors all four years in cross country. He was the first male runner from WJU and the tenth in conference history to accomplish that task.\u00a0He was an individual qualifier for the NAIA Cross Country National Championship as a freshman and a member of the 1997 and 1998 WVIAC championship teams in track and field.\u00a0Buell graduated from WJU with a bachelor of science in biology and a master’s in physical therapy. He and his wife Amanda reside in Huntington, where he currently serves as director of physical therapy for Tri-State Rehab Services.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Staley came to Wheeling Jesuit from Fort Mitchell, Ky. where he attended Beechwood High School.Staley was a member of the Cardinal swim team from 1996 \u2013 2000, where he was a seven-time NCAA All-American. He was the first swimmer in WJU history to be named All-American and was chosen Academic All-American twice.Staley currently holds four WJU pool records in the 100 and 200 backstroke, as well as the 200 and 400 medley relays.\u00a0He graduated from WJU with a bachelor of science in psychology and doctorate in physical therapy. Staley resides in Florence, Ky. with his wife Audrey and daughter Madilyn, where he practices physical therapy in a home health setting.<\/p>\n
Established in 1987 to honor former student-athletes, coaches or other members of the Wheeling Jesuit community who have made significant contributions to the success of the WJU athletic programs, the Cardinal Athletic Hall of Fame will number 71 members after these additions.<\/p>\n
The Hall of Fame brunch and induction ceremony is part of Wheeling Jesuit’s Alumni and Family Homecoming Weekend. Other weekend athletic events include men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming and soccer events.\u00a0On Friday, Oct. 22, the Cardinal swim team, coached by Rick West, will have its annual Alumni Swim Meet, beginning at 6 p.m. In addition, a men and women\u2019s double-header soccer match against Urbana University at James LaRosa Stadium. The Cardinal women, coached by Carrie Hanna, get started at 5 p.m., and the men, coached by Jim Regan, follow at 7 p.m.\u00a0On Saturday, Oct. 23, the men and women\u2019s swim team will host Urbana University, beginning at 1 p.m. In addition, the women\u2019s soccer team will play Slippery Rock University later that day at 4 p.m. All athletic eventss are open to the public.<\/p>\n
