{"id":20888,"date":"2023-02-21T14:47:05","date_gmt":"2023-02-21T19:47:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ovathletics.com\/home\/?p=20888"},"modified":"2023-02-21T14:50:51","modified_gmt":"2023-02-21T19:50:51","slug":"wvu-d2-mens-hockey-club-wins-first-ever-championship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ovathletics.com\/home\/wvu-d2-mens-hockey-club-wins-first-ever-championship\/","title":{"rendered":"WVU D2 Men&#8217;s Hockey Club Wins First-Ever Championship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two Wheeling Central Catholic High School graduates, Class of 2021, are members of the West Virginia University hockey team that won its first-ever conference championship Sunday, February 19, at the Winston-Salem, NC, Fairgrounds Annex.<\/p>\n<p>Mason Smith and Caleb Karnell play on the Mountaineers D2 club hockey team that clinched the Atlantic Coast Collegiate Hockey League M2 Division Admiral\u2019s Cup with a 5-0 shutout of University of North Carolina-Charlotte. With the win the Mountaineers advance into the regional tournament scheduled for March 3-5 in Winston-Salem.<\/p>\n<p>WVU\u2019s D2 hockey club, a non-athletic department program, has been a member of the ACCHL for five years. The program earned its first-ever playoff game win with its 2-1, double-overtime victory against Georgetown in the quarterfinals on Friday, February 17.<\/p>\n<p>The Mountaineers followed that with a 7-0 shutout of Elon the next day in the semifinals to advance to the championship. With wins over Elon and UNCC the Mountaineers avenged losses to both teams at a tournament earlier in the season.<\/p>\n<p>After senior goaltender Michael Mackey held Georgetown to one goal in 70+ minutes in the quarterfinals, freshman goaltender Griffin Knorr posted back-to-back shutouts against Elon and UNCC. Knorr stopped a combined 70 shots in the two games.<\/p>\n<p>Team leading scorer Mark Stankiewicz was named tournament MVP.<\/p>\n<p>WVU has a 17-7-2 record with the playoff championship, including a 10-0-1 record and first place finish in the ACCHL Elite Division Virginia Region regular season.<\/p>\n<p>Several Mountaineers received honors following the regular season, including Stankiewicz who was named to the First Team All-ACC in the D2 Elite Division.<\/p>\n<p>Teammate Jake Weikel was named a member of the Rookie Team, and Head Coach Tyler Kutek was honored as Coach of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Both sophomores, Smith and Karnell have been playing for the WVU program for two seasons.<\/p>\n<p>Smith, a forward, played football, hockey and lacrosse at Wheeling Central, winning state championships in all three sports.<\/p>\n<p>Karnell, a defenseman, also won state championships while playing football, hockey and lacrosse for the Maroon Knights.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20891\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20891\" style=\"width: 473px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20891 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ovathletics.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_3052-1-473x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"473\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ovathletics.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_3052-1-473x1024.png 473w, https:\/\/www.ovathletics.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_3052-1-139x300.png 139w, https:\/\/www.ovathletics.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_3052-1-768x1663.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ovathletics.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_3052-1-709x1536.png 709w, https:\/\/www.ovathletics.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_3052-1-946x2048.png 946w, https:\/\/www.ovathletics.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_3052-1-600x1299.png 600w, https:\/\/www.ovathletics.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_3052-1.png 1125w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20891\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo courtesy of Bob Smith<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two Wheeling Central Catholic High School graduates, Class of 2021, are members of the West Virginia University hockey team that won its first-ever conference championship Sunday, February 19, at the Winston-Salem, NC, Fairgrounds Annex.
