Morgantown \u2013 The West Virginia University baseball team defeated Canisius, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Hawley Field to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Golden Griffins.<\/p>\n
The Mountaineers (12-8) scored four runs on six hits with two errors, while Canisius (5-12) had three runs on five hits with one error.<\/p>\n
West Virginia\u2019s offensive attack was led by outfielder Brady Wilson and first baseman Ryan McBroom. Wilson went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs, while McBroom was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored.<\/p>\n
Getting the win for the Mountaineers was Andy Berry (3-1) who threw a complete game and allowed two earned runs on five hits.<\/p>\n
After Canisius scored one run in the top of the second, the Mountaineers were able to take a 3-1 lead after scoring three runs on four hits in the bottom half of the inning. Designated hitter Jeremy Gum opened the inning with a single through the right side. After a sacrifice bunt by outfielder Chris Rasky, McBroom singled up the middle to drive Gum in from second base. Outfielder Mark Dvoroznak followed suit with a single to left and was followed by Wilson\u2019s triple to deep right center field that scored McBroom and Dvoroznak.<\/p>\n
The Mountaineers scored their fourth and final run in the bottom of the third when second baseman Dan DiBartolomeo was driven home by a sacrifice fly to center field by McBroom.<\/p>\n
Drew Pettit went 3-for-3 for the Golden Griffins with one RBI, while Will Chomicki and Brian Burton each recorded one RBI.<\/p>\n
Chris Cox took the loss for the Golden Griffins, throwing a complete game and giving up three earned runs on six hits.<\/p>\n
The Mountaineers and Canisius will be back in action tomorrow at noon at Hawley Field for the series finale.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
