MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 7, 2011) – The West Virginia University track and field team is currently in fourth place this evening, after completing the second day of action at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships with two conference titles.
Senior Chelsea Carrier became the first Mountaineer in school history to win a long jump title in the outdoor season with a personal-best distance of 6.42 meters. The mark also was the longest jump at the BIG EAST Championship since Rutgers’ Shameka Marshall jumped 6.47 meters in 2005 and places her second on WVU’s all-time list.
The Buckhannon, W.Va., native also qualified for the finals in the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles, while teammate Chené Townsend will join Carrier in the 100-meter hurdle finals.
Senior Kate Harrison won the first BIG EAST title of her career this evening with a first-place showing in the 10,000-meter run. The Toronto, Ontario, native took the top spot with a time of 33:59.84, while junior Sarah-Anne Brault finished second (34:04.63), freshman Kaitlyn Gillespie placed fourth (34:10.91) and junior Ahna Lewis finished eighth (34.50.90).
Senior Katelyn Williams also posted an excellent finish today with a third-place showing in the heptathlon. The Chesterland, Ohio, native ended the event with 5,044 total points after placing fifth in the 800-meter run (2:24.16), fifth in the long jump (5.32 meters) and fourth in the javelin (29.30 meters).
Junior Meghan Mock aided the Mountaineers with an eighth-place showing in the long jump (5.81 meters), while senior Keri Bland qualified for the finals in the 1,500-meter run and senior April Rotilio qualified for the finals in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes.
Action will continue tomorrow at 11 a.m.
