WVU Welcomes New Addition to Coaching Staff

MORGANTOWN – West Virginia University has announced that Daron Roberts has joined the Mountaineer football coaching staff as an assistant football coach, handling the wide receivers and working extensively with the special teams.

“We welcome Daron Roberts to West Virginia University,” WVU football coach Bill Stewart said. “He has a solid coaching resume and will make an outstanding addition to our coaching staff.”

Roberts comes to West Virginia after serving as the assistant secondary coach for the NFL’s Detroit Lions for the past two years. He led the practice and pregame defensive back drills, focusing on man-to-man coverage, plant-and-drive, jam re-routes and zone-drop techniques. He installed the zone, man-to-man, nickel and blitz packages for the defensive backs. He administrated blitz and coverage walk-thru sessions and supervised the opponent scout team. Roberts also evaluated the weaknesses/strengths of free agent and draft eligible players, assisted with the in-house workouts of potential signees and administered defensive back workouts during college pro days.

“I am thrilled to have Daron Roberts join the West Virginia football family,” WVU Offensive Coordinator Dana Holgorsen said. “He is one of the brightest and most motivated young men in our entire profession. He will coach the wide receivers, and I know he will do a great job with the special teams.”

Roberts spent the prior two seasons (2007 & 2008) as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs (NFL) coaching staff. In 2008, he was the defensive quality control assistant and was the special teams/defensive volunteer coaching assistant in 2007

In 2008, Roberts produced weekly scouting reports that contained personnel breakdown and formation tendencies, down/distance tendencies and play diagrams with detailed blocking schemes and route combinations. He tutored rookie defensive backs, created team/player specific video cutups for head coach, ran weekly self-scout breakdowns to isolate Chiefs’ defensive call tendencies and success versus run/pass. He assisted the secondary coach with film breakdown and served as the sideline signal-caller during team practices and games.

In 2007, Roberts set up special team drills for practices, led kickoff and punt drills, focusing on lane integrity and get-off techniques and spearheaded post-practice drills for kickoff and punt returners. He assisted with the daily player grading and evaluation and produced weekly opponent scouting reports on kicking phase tendencies for special teams’ coordinator.

Roberts also brings a vast array of experience in the law field, having earned a bachelor’s degree in government from Texas in 2001 and two degrees from Harvard, a master’s degree in public policy in 2004 and a law degree in 2007.

He worked for four law firms, serving as an associate, governmental affairs committee staffer for Senator Joseph Lieberman and as an assistant to the chief counsel for Texas Lieutenant Governor Bill Ratliff.

Roberts is the founder and chairman of the board of 4th-and-1 Football Camp, which he created to provide free SAT prep, life skills workshops and football training to at-risk high school students in East Texas. He has raised more than $50,000 from private individual and corporations and managed 14 staffers and 35 volunteers during week-long camp at Northeast Texas State University.
