    Predictions: Buckeye 8 -- Week 1

I know it's early, but here I go.

    1. Steubenville Central @ Bellaire -- The Crusaders will win plenty of games this year, but this will certainly not be one of them. Bellaire, 68-28

    2. Pittsburgh Taylor Alderdice @ Martins Ferry -- Alderdice is probably athletic enough to keep this interesting for a half, but the Purple Riders will pull away in the 2nd half.
    Martins Ferry, 36-14

    3. St. Clairsville @ Claymont -- Claymont are the Mustangs, but St. C.'s Jaylon Brown is a Stingray Corvette -- and Mike Ferns is a Ram 2500 truck.
    St. C., 38-20

    4. Weir @ Indian Creek -- Not much to see here.
    Indian Creek, 24-0

    5. Harrison Central @ Wheeling Central -- Don't think Harrison has enough juice to hang with the Maroon Knights this year.
    Wheeling Central, 34-13

    6. Edison @ Oak Glen -- O.G. always seems to find a way to sneak by Edison.
    Oak Glen, 20-19

    7. Union Local @ Monroe Central -- One head coach is in his very first game, while the other has been at it for more than 40 seasons.
    Monroe Central, 20-7

    8. Pittsburgh Westinghouse @ Buckeye Local -- It's a good thing Buckeye has this game on the schedule.
    Buckeye Local, 28-6

        1) Starting with an upset right off the bat, not a big believer in Bellaire like most on here are. Steubeville Central is no slouch. Most of the games between these 2 come down to the wire. Going with the Crusaders in a mild upset 38-36

        2) Alderdice probably has more athletes than the Riders, but the Riders have a better team and usually start the year much better than they finish. Alderdice may well be winning at the half, but won't be at the end. 28-22 Riders

        3) People are flat out wrong if they think St. Clairsville is going to take a huge step backwards. They are still the team to beat in my eyes. This game will not be close 45-14 Devils

        4) Not much to say here. Weir has a long way to go. 35-0 Creek

5)Unlike St.Clairsville, Harrison Central is going to take a huge step back this year. Wheeling Central gets Parker Henry back, as well as many contributors from last year. Love Coach Krop, but not this game 42-6 Central

        6) Edison should be much improved this year with the return of a very underrated player in Nolan Marcus. Look for the Wildcats to start the year off right in a game will not be as close as some think. 32-13 Edison

        7) A very established program going up against a not so established program. Give Coach Stiles time, he will most definitely right the ship in Jet land, but it's going to take awhile. 28-6 Monroe

        8) Buckeye will start they year off right here 1-0, but may very well end up 1-9..21-13 buckeye

Point 1. Steubenville Central actually led Bellaire, 42-19, in the 3rd quarter of last year's game in Steubenville. If they could not hold on for that victory, I don't see any way they beat this great Bellaire team.

Point 2. You have to realize that most of those people predicting a "huge step backwards" for St. C. are people from Bellaire or Martins Ferry -- who obviously are hoping the Red Devils take a "huge step backwards."

As high as I am on Bellaire this year, they have to address a major issue if they are going to get 13 or 14 wins this year:

The defense has to get better. And they have to get better while losing three of their best defensive players from last year (Dalton Conroy, Logan Koshenka and Nick Maffe).

Perfect example: Last year, St. Clairsville only led Bellaire by a score of 24-14 at halftime. In literally about 10 minutes of actual time (not game time -- actual time) after the 2nd half started, the score was 45-14. All St. C. did was make a slight adjustment to the blocking scheme during halftime, and Jaylon Brown was "out the gate."

Everyone knows the offense will be there for Bellaire. If they want to be on the level of the Big Reds' teams of the mid-1990s and mid-2000s, the defense has to improve.

Those are the predicted winners of the eight week 1 buckeye 8 games. Not the predicted Buckeye 8 rankings.

Bellaire's offense was just about unstoppable at times last season but their defense could not stop anyone. If Bellaire had more players that actually played defense and could take the pressure off the offensive players that wind up playing on defense as well (2 way players) then this could have the makings of a very special season (a.k.a STC last season). Bellaire wins 11 games but will ultimately not advance out of their sectional.

Bellaire is in the same Region as Newark Catholic, State Runner up from last season and huge favorite to win the State this season. The NC quarterback 6'4 219 has signed with D1 Illinois.
