    Shadyside

The more I look at the last 15-20 years and this years Shadyside scores and their opposition I think Shadyside can lay claim to the best program in the OVAC. (I left Steubenville out, for obvious reasons and because they never qualify to win the OVAC).

Whatever they are doing down there, if more OVAC schools would mirror and implement what the Tigers are doing the OVAC would improve ten-fold and garner some respect. My contention is that D7 Shadyside, Could play all the biggest schools in the OVAC and win it yearly. I realize that pride and tradition go a long way toward being a great program and Shadyside has an edge there.

    Agree? Disagree?

They have had great success locally. Outside the Ohio Valley not so much. I would rate them right behind Wheeling Central. To suggest they would have the same success against the likes of Wheeling Park, John Marshall. Brooke, Fort Frye and St.C I think is a bit of a stretch.

Shadyside is 21-20 in playoffs versus NON-OVAC schools since 2000. Not great success, but not too bad. Overall, record in this time frame is 198 wins and around 65 losses.

I didn’t say same results….but I do think they can play with all of those teams you mentioned, with Park maybe not. All the others, yea they would do well.

I could see Shadyside playing the following schedule and have great success allowing for a down talent cycle every now and then.

              Bridgeport
              Buckeye local
              Fort Frye
              Martins Ferry
              Brooke
              Wheeling Central
              John Marshall
              St C
              River
              Bellaire

Ambitious? For sure, but there is not one team on that schedule that Shadyside couldn’t beat most years. Might struggle with St. C but would win 3-4 of every 10. I know using comparative scores (not always a good gauge) they would do just fine and would win the OVAC more years than not. Just my humble opinion.

The problem is say if you lose to Wheeling Central, St. C. Fort Frye and Bellaire you miss the playoffs.

Not with 16 teams....and if you start playing the better teams, the better shot you have to reach their level of play!!!

That's true. But isn't the 16 team format temporary ? I see what you're saying though.

I agree with you , although Brooke and J M would not be any different then the success they have had against Bellaire , probably much less.

it took EVERYTHING JM had to defeat D7 Trimble by what, 1 point. Granted Trimble is a perennial power, but Shadyside is a D7 tradition rich program as well.

Great post to appreciate 'little' D7 Shadyside 'Tigers' but not little in HEART! The secret ingredient...absolute love for their school, tradition, community and great coaching! Talk to any 'Tiger' athlete and they will tell you there is no place they would rather represent than the Shadyside orange/black. Whatever sport, Shadyside athletes know they are expected to play an excellent game and to never back down to any team...no matter how big the school. Agree with a more challenging schedule...would prepare them for winning in the final playoff games in Ohio. That's exactly what Wheeling Central does; i.e., hops over to Ohio and plays Bellaire, Shadyside, St Clairsville, Martins Ferry, etc., took a big loss the other night vs St Clairsville but when they play in WVa playoffs, they will not meet the talent that they already played in regular season and, will, most likely, win the State Championship in WVa. Playing great demanding schedules only makes teams better! smile

They won't endure any growing pains with Bridgeport on their schedule. And why do they keep Bridgeport on their schedule anyway ?
                            Can someone explain ?

Brooke and John Marshall are absurd. They are AAA schools. Shadyside is an A in West Virginia. Here is a good schedule for Shadyside:

                              Fort Frye
                              Martins Ferry
                              Bridgeport
                              Wheeling Central
                              South Range
                              Bellaire
                              Warren John F Kennedy
                              Trimble
                              Newark Catholic
                              Garaway

I also took of StC because it violates my rule about playing a school three divisions away.
