Week 5: Dover Tornadoes at Steubenville Big Red

Something interesting I got out of the Dover football program. Ohio HS football all-time wins list—Steubenville is 3rd, Dover is 6th (Martins Ferry is 7th and sadly Bellaire has dropped out of the top 10)
All-time Ohio HS baseball wins list- Steubenville is 3rd with 1,387 and Dover is 10th with 1,105.

    All-time Ohio Bball wins list-Dover is 10th.

Two very tradition rich programs meeting on Friday. The only difference between the two is Big Red has had playoff success and won state titles. Dover has not had postseason success in their history.

As for the game, I think Dover will be able to move the ball through the air on Big Red. QB #4 Judkins is listed at 5’7” but plays much bigger. Tough, stocky kid and throws a nice ball. He’s elusive in the pocket and can scramble. He has a couple nice backs and receivers. The line is good sized. Based on how much they threw the ball last night, I would peg them as a pass first team. However that might have more to do with the high scoring affair they were in with Indian Valley. Dover people on Yappi are saying they were run first in previous games.

Dover’s defense is definitely susceptible to the run. Again, Dover posters on Yappi are saying they are all speed and finesse and aren’t a physical team. I don’t know if it’s that or if it’s they were playing against the toughest running back I’ve seen in the Eastern District in many years. Kinsey from Indian Valley literally ran through their defense. Positive yardage every play. He flat out ran Dover kids over all night. I sure as heck wouldn’t have wanted to tackle this kid as a 16 or 17 year old. Dover didn’t want to either.

I think Steubenville will score on them. Dover will score as long as they put drives together and can be more balanced. The passing every play type offense did not win them the game last night. I don’t think it will on Friday either. Judkins is a playmaker. I can see him putting up big numbers, but Big Red still coming out with a close win at home. Face it, when you enter Death Valley as a visiting team, you’re down 7-0 before kickoff. Can Dover overcome the intimidating environment? IV beat up Dover physically. Does that carry over into this game with Big Red? They lost their starting safety in the 1st quarter and lost maybe 1-2 more starters throughout the course of the game. I do not think Dover will be going into this game at full strength.

By the way, last night was my first regular season game at Dover Crater Stadium and the place was rocking. Absolutely packed. I love football in T-county and the surrounding area. It’s what OV football was 20+ years ago.

Judkins was 9-18 for 80 yards last year only 30 on the ground as well. I expect more of the same. He’s not a great thrower, and Big Red will contain him per usual like the last 2 years.

Big Red by 2 or more scores. While IV has one of the best RBs in the state. I’ll say BR has one of the better Olines in the state. That Indian Valley film vs Dover last night will provide Big Red how and where to attack.

While I did not know the 2023 stat line for Judkins, I will have to say he must have made drastic improvements. I know a good thrower when I see one and the kid can spin it. They might hold him in check, and that will be a big credit to Big Red. Now I will say, the deep ball is not there for him (at least it wasn’t last night). Short to intermediate game was fantastic.

          No ejections, no problems.
All hands on deck for Dover.

Do you mean playing at Steubenville the environment and tradition put you behind immediately or are you implying there is a referee issue in play?

Stadium is so close to the field. Feels like it’s an enclosed environment with fans right on top of you. Lots of support, big crowd, tradition, state titles fire breathing horse. The S on the helmet is kind of like Yankee pinstripes. There’s a respect about the program statewide. The 7-0 before the kickoff is more about playing on the road in a stadium with a home field advantage.

Very defensive. I went to two games last season at Licking Valley and New Phila and there were many bad calls in favor of the home team. I think that just happens everywhere.

Time will tell but definitely could be down some
key players. Especially with video now making rounds on social media.

do you mean the obvious illegal man down field on a licking valley scoring play??? Or them playing with 12 guys on the field during that should have resulted in 15 and a 1st down.

really didn’t matter. They had 50 in the 3rd Q but the narrative of bad officials at Harding stadium is laughable.

Man I was referring to Licking Valley vs Linsly at Licking Valley and New Phila vs West Holmes when talking about questionable calls at home fields that I saw last season. I was making the point that it happens everywhere.

I think I’m done posting on Big Red threads. Heck I made this thread, which was not my place. Anything I say is either wrong or is somehow a slight at steubenville. I don’t think I’ve ever said a bad thing about them on a thread.

Thank you. I tend to go on the defensive because we hear a lot of “when you go to Steubenville you have to play against the referees too”

Steubenville is actually penalized more at home than their opponents are.

That’s part of our threads we’re so used to the shots that people take. I was following your tone and understood your post.

To be fair we are the “defenders of the Crimson & the Black” it’s kinda in our blood. I’m glad you liked Death ☠️ Valley and its atmosphere. Thank you for starting the thread you beat me to it.

now is when you tell the entire thread “now go home and get your shine box”!!!!
