    OVAC champs

I was listening to a talk show the other day and they were going about what a great conference the OVAC is, but how many true class champions are there in the OVAC. Let's not waste time discussing football which is a joke. Take sports such as basketball, baseball, volleyball, and softball. Yes they play a tournament taking the top four but you can qualify without playing teams in your class or you can not make it even though you may be the best because of the schedule you play (either too tough or too weak) so that is not a true champion. I am in no way taking away from the teams that won those champioships just the setup. Golf has a true class champion because you compete with those in your class only. X-C may have a true class champion if they score points only within your class which I think they do. Wrestling points are rewarded with how you do against all classes not just yours, this favors a team with a few good wrestlers and not a good overall team. Not sure about tennis but I think it is the same as wrestling. Swimming is the same as wretling I think. The track format may have been the worst idea in history, they had class championship up until last year when some numbskulls came up with a combined meet. As I have stated in the past I love the idea of all the athletes coming together at one site but the class scoring should be done at Bellaire and Shadyside. The OVAC prides itself on being a CONFERENCE which it really is not.

I'll have to disagree with you on wrestling. A team with an overall better team will most times finish higher than a team with just a few good wrestlers. I don't recall the point system, but a team that places 8 - 10 wrestlers will generally gain more points than a team that only place 2 - 3 champions. I don't know maybe when I have some time I'll research a little more, but my gut tells me that a team that places more wrestlers will finish higher.

Bigred you may be right most of the time but there are instances where a team can place 3-4 wrestlers really high, like the top 4, and not have any other wrestlers on the team and beat a team that might place 5-6 kids low that fills every weight class. I am not argueing that the OVAC meet is bad (I think it is outstanding) but point is that you do not get a TRUE class champ when they are not just wrestling each other.

I would like to get the thoughts of wrestling fans on here. What if the OVAC held matches for A and AA on a Monday and AAA and AAAA on a Wednesday. There would be no score kept just the top 4 wrestlers in each class adavnced to wrestle on a Saturday and then the team scores would determine the champ. Would that be fair to the 5th place finishers in AAA and AAAA who could not wrestle but they were much better than the A and AA champs? That is what they have done in track.

The OVAC is coming out with a new format for Dual meet wrestling championship. Im not sure if im aloud to relase the format but it is much better then the dual meeting standings of the past.

Also i think some of you are talking about the OVAC tournament its self. Yes if you have a few good wrestlers you can win your division. Also remember that Buckeye Local won the OVAC tournament with no champions one year!

Not to get off topic, but why not set aside one Friday or Saturday and have each class have their own tournament, that way you have a definite class champ

The OVAC wrestling meet is great just the way it is. The main thing that makes it great is that there are no class divisions. Everybody wrestles everybody.

The OVAC also is improving things...

They didn't improve the track format.

I like the XC format. I think it allows for each class A,AA,AAA,AAAA to have a team and individuals (top 10 runner in each class) champion plus then the overall team and overall individuals (top 20 runners) champion combined classes. At the end of the day everyone knows who the best teams and individuals are.

I don’t understand why sports like baseball, soccer, basketball etc. don’t have one overall team bracketed championship. The county my HS team was in had these bracketed and seeded county championships regardless of size of school. Nothing was better than beating a large school which was 5x the size of ours for the county championships.

What was wrong with track...they have the top from the small schools against the top from the big schools and you get true champions...the only issue I have is that you don't get recognition as a small school champ individually...that also likely saves money.

You get a true overall champ which is good, but the class championships are not a true indication of the best team.

Not just small school champs, but all class individual champs should have been recognized with at least a certificate saying Champion for whatever class in whatever event.
The battle is always the fiercest just before the victory.
