    OVAC- What's the Point?

There is a thread on football which says the OVAC is down to 48 schools, as most of us believe the OVAC is not a real conference at all in the traditional sense that schools play each other and win a real conference championship. The Buckeye 8 and Two Rivers Conference at least seem to be on the right track as far as conferences go. OVAC is just a conglomeration of schools.

Here's how well the OVAC is run:

Football- anyone like how this conference champion is "chosen"
Cross Country- I assume they can get a distance race correct
    Volleyball-
Golf- any reason why not just a big school/ small school champion?
Soccer- nice 8 team tournament but the qualifying requirements leave something to be desired

Basketball- Because of the division split-ups, the best teams don't play each other- no real conference champions- an 8 or 16 team- big/small tournament would be more exciting but will never happen
    Swimming-
Wrestling- seems like mostly positive comments about this tournament

Softball & Baseball- I assume this works the same as basketball- any reason why this can't be an 8 team tournament ( I assume it is not)
Track- I have heard very few people say positive things about this meet.
Tennis - Seems like this is done well

Golf.... Only two clases would make it a
tournament so large it would be very
difficult to conduct. Certainly do not
want a repeat of the WV state tourney
environment where it closes an entire
golf course for two days and it takes
players up to 7 hours to complete
their round. Its not golf, its survival
    of the fittest.

Eliminate all classes. Most sports could go one separate championship tournament. Seed top 16 for bigger sports like baseball and basketball. Keep XC, track and wrestling the same just eliminate the separate classes. ONE Champ

But 5 classes in golf may be too many.

Class A without Rosecrans will be a little funny
since some of the schools in the new Class A
do not have full golf teams or none at all.

I've been saying it since I made this site. The OVAC is not a "conference", if anything, they are a League. I don't understand why there is not a restructure.

The OVAC could be so strong, and make so much movement if they were open to a free flow of new ideas and concepts that would strengthen the actual vision of why the conference was founded.

The OVAC needs to bring in some NEW faces/minds that can take it into the year 2012 and beyond!

Get rid of classes, and create REAL conferences within the League.

            Wheeling Central
            Beallsville

            Oak Glen

There are still a couple schools left... but this is a better start.

You have to schedule 6 conference games, leaving each school with 4 open dates. Every year, the Conference winners for the League get first dips on HOME scheduling.

Switch Oak Glen and Madonna, and Weir and Tyler should be in a conference with other AA schools for them to have a good WV playoff point schedule.

In the tri-county conference,Toronto would have tons of travel miles along with Beallsville from the Interstate conference. You may want to move them two around.

It's a shame that some school would never go for it. I love the New Buckeye 8 & the Mountaineer Conf. for the big schools. You could put Zanesville in the Mountaineer & maybe we could see a Big Red-Parkersburgh South meeting some how.

I know people are always saying that this school won't play this school because of this reason and so on, but if the schools wants to play each other bad enough then they will make it happen IMO.

In the OVAC wrestling tournament, you already have an overall champion but the 1A and 2A schools for example need to keep their class championship as well. It is very difficult for the smaller schools to win any championship when all the schools compete together. It keeps the OVAC wrestling tourney interesting all the way up to the end of Saturday's championship matches when you have the class champions. The reason why you have 5 classifications now is to promote fairness and competition with schools close to their own size.

One of the best things about it is that everybody wrestles everybody. You have true individual champions that way.
