    OVAC Track Meet

Day one started yesterday at St.C with the first of qualifying for 3A & 5A some impressive marks in the Pole Vault with the girl from Trail going 12'1 and the girl from Warren 12'4. Also P. South and Indian Creek opting out of the conference championships. Would have been nice race in the girls 4x8 between University, Creek and Morgantown.

It is disappointing that some OVAC schools are opting not to compete or choosing to participate in only a few events. If weather cooperates, there should be a lot of great competition and great marks generated the rest of this week.

It's Ridiculous that teams a re skipping this. They should be punished severely.

11.1.2 Should a school choose not to compete for a championship in a sport that they
sponsor, they will be ineligible for that school year only. [Compete means failure to schedule the
minimum number of games, leave required dates open, or just choose not to take part.] However,
in doing so, they will also:
        lForfeit the right to have athletes for that sport gain All-Conference recognition;
        [Effective 2012-2013]
lForfeit the right to earn “sports specific” scholarships. [Effective 2012-2013]
lForfeit the right to participate in any All-Star game for that sport; [Effective 2013-2014]
11.1.3 Additionally, the school will have the entry fee for participation accumulated each
year they do not participate and will not be permitted to participate until that fee is paid. [Example:
Don’t compete this year; next year entry fee is $80. Don’t compete until following year,

Why punish the kids when it's clearly the adults that have made the decision? Problem is two-fold though 1 the AD's for joining the conference and 2 the OVAC for offering them to be in the conference so they can pound their chest that we are the largest conference in the US.

Morgantown & University would have to leave school at noon to get to make it there on a weekday then wouldn't get back until midnight. Just more reason why they shouldn't even be in the OVAC.

No "Balls" from the OVAC to enforce their own Rules.

I have been beating this dead horse since 2010. Move the meet to a week earlier. Not sure why Indian Creek is not in the meet, but Parkersburg South would have to travel Monday,Wednesday, and Saturday to St. C. this week and then turn around and go to Brooke Thursday for their regional. When are they suppose to train. I guarantee Morgantown and University will not run their best distance runners in mpore than one event.

Creek is running in a large meet in PA this weekend I believe.

The staff that worked the OVAC track meet on Saturday (only day I attended) needs a huge pat on the back for running the track meet in an excellent manner. Great job!

Many WV schools feel having success at the state
level is more important than an OVAC event.

I agree 100%, move the meet and the competition will be stiffer. The meet itself is run extremely efficient.

I disagree. WV needs to move the state meet back to Memorial Day weekend, which almost happened this year.

But I do agree that the OVAC meet this year went very well. Kudos to all involved.

I agree WV should go back to a 13 week season, but they moved their state meet 4 or 5 years before the OVAC changed to current format.

Your comments as well as those from other posters on how well the meet was run are appreciated. This may sound cliché, but everyone involved with the meet agrees that the athletes are what makes this meet and that is why we want to do the best we can to let them shine. And the athletes did shine. We all know about some of the great winning performances but I also know that there were even more personal records achieved.

I know I am a little biased but the anchor leg by Matthew Marling (STC Anchor leg in 4X4) was the gutsiest things that I have witnessed at a track meet. Then the support he received from STC teammates (boys and girls), officials, and fans was simply awesome.

I must also say that the professionalism, knowledge, and cooperation of our registered officials is incredible. No one complains about their assignments and everyone does whatever is needed including being part of the hurdle crew. (I have been at many meets outside the area where the "white shirts" refuse to touch a hurdle.)

Finally, the unpaid volunteers that Kelly Rine (STC AD) is able to get to help out are definitely the unsung heroes of this meet.
