What do you think of this?

    Purely a hypothetical:

Say there was a freshman girl, great student, wonderful kid, and a very talented athlete.

She plays travel, at a very high level, in 3 sports...softball, basketball, and hockey.

The level of hockey is real high...the last 2 years her team has lost in their age group National finals by 1 goal...she's the center on a line with Mario Lemeiux's daughter...her coach lives in Boston, she has teammates from New England to Florida. Played in tournaments as far as California. She currently plays in a league in Detroit.

She went out for basketball her freshman year...her coach knew about her hockey aspirations and assigned her his varsity. She played a few early games and contributed...one game she slowed dramatically one of the valley's premier senior point guards in a big upset win.

She then had league hockey games and missed basketball. The coach since demoted her to JV...and his team has run into a bit of a rough patch...

No one respects the concept of team as I, but I wonder, here's a kid who is excelling, who was upfront with time commitments, who now sits...what do you think?

What would you do as coach?

But does it matter if one day she has a gold medal around her neck?

    Good Luck! God speed!

In my opinion its not fair to the girls that are at practice every day and are committed 100% to the team. A similar situation occurred last year at on ohio school and the girl chose the other sport because it was her main priority and it really worked out well for her. This year she chose to play basketball and is committed to the team, without her they are not 13-1. She has missed one game due to a cancelled basketball game that was to be made up and it conflicted with an already approved commitment to the other sport and everybody involved was behind her 100%. It can be done but the table has to be set before the season starts and everybody involved has to be OK with it, especially the head coach of the school sport. Any more most sports are all year round in some way or another and its a shame that some kids have to pick (or as some say specialize in one sport). Believe it or not there are some coaches that do not support kids playing other sports at the school they coach at, my opinion is play as many as you can because you can't look back after its all over and WISH you did things different. High school is a short time in your life, make the most of it, paricipate in as much as you can, you won't regret it.

Great Post iknowmysports! This is so true and coaches should appreciate that these kids truly love sports and most athletes are good at multiple sports. Why make kids choose when this is their life and they love the sports that they play!

Multiple sports are great. There are so many kids in this area that play multiple sports and excel in the classroom as well. It truly amazes me! However, I have to say from experience, that it is fine if the sports are played during different seasons. However, if two sports are played during the same season, then the student has to make a choice. No matter how good of a player the student is. It is very unfair to the other committed kids on the team that are at all of the practices and all the games to sit. It also puts the coach in a bind to make a decision to play the multiple sport kid or a kid that comes to everything. Kappy...in your hypothetical situation (although, I think we all know what you are talking about and there are many other good players already on the team), in my opinion, the student is lucky to be playing JV. This player is taking JV time from another committed kid. If I were the coach, I would say make a decision....end of story.

I don't kneel at the alter of fairness...it's a lot like misery...the only way to get people to eat it is to spread it around evenly...

but the coach made a decision and chose her for his varsity and played her in key situations and then we had the snow and make-ups...

and then the coach changed his decision and then made her choose...what does that say to his other players...it is my contention it is more corrosive than a player missing due to rescheduling...

It is tough for they coach if she/he decides to let a player play another sport during bball season. In this case, i believe what was said above is correct, the coach ok'd the player to play both and would punish the player for missing or being late. I was told the punishment was running extra after practice and sitting out varsity games. The coach probably has heard from many complaining about this but it was his decision and I believe he is handling it well.

Wick was never demoted. The deal was (or still is as far as I know) for every game she missed due to hockey she would have to sit out the next varsity game and I am pretty sure the parents and her were well aware of it before the season started. In my oppion I think thats a fair deal. I dont think it would be right for there not to be some kind of action for not being there. Dont most coaches have some kind of rules as far as kids missing games, especially multiple games (as is the case with her). To me what makes it interseting is the fact that the coach has the balls to do something like that with her dad being on the BOE. To me thats says something about the character of the coach and does send a message to the rest of the kids (It doesnt matter who you or your realitives are, you are not above the program). I know some coaches that dont have a back bone at all and let the kids and parents dictate how the program is ran. They are not usally very successful either.

But I will say I have know Wick for several years now and she is one of the greatest kids I have meet and I would bet if she was asked how she felt about it, she would have no regrets or bad feelings about the situation. She chooses to play hockey because that is what she truely loves to play.

I've been watching OVAC basketball for forty years. I don't remember a freshman playing a better all-around game than the one Emily Puskarich of Wheeling Park played against Big Red last night.

I guess you have to start with the 32 points she scored. That's 32 out of 53 for the team. But it's the way she scored them. In the first half she hit four three-pointers and got fouled on a fifth and made all three free throws. In the second half, as Park was down nine points with four minutes, she scored off of defense and steals. She made ten field goals on probably 16 or 17 shots and made 8 of 9 free throws. She hit big free throws in the closing moments.

Defensively, she got big rebounds and steals. At one point late in the fourth quarter, she picked a Big Red guard at half court for a lay-up. But the thing I liked most... late in the fourth quarter, there was a loose ball and she dove in head first for a jump ball.

She's had her best games this season against Park's toughest opponents. Let's not forget that Big Red is 12 and 3 team. They are very solid.

Just wanted to point out her performance under this FAB FROSH post.

Great performance from a very nice young lady.

Almost 60 hours without power...back in action...

Emmy's emmy is as much to do with her upperclassman and coaching who have promoted this action.

Kudos again to those Wheeling Park upperclassman who's action allowed this to happen and to the coaching who created this positive atmosphere for success...not many would look to a frosh...even a fab frosh to deliver when needed...but Emmy is what she is...

She plays her best when her team needs her the most...our other fab frosh will be leaned against as their careers develop...

JM's Young got into foul trouble the other night...and Kiley stepped to the front and lead all scorers with 17 and picked up slack...Kristen played the Huge D she's capable and scored 4.

Our Shadyside girls also contribute to a 1 defeat season...Beans and Em are healping the WC girls as they develop to the playoffs...

So proud of all their efforts...
