Martins Ferry 10-1 vs Poland Seminary 9-2

Ferry is the underdog but I was surprised Ferry will be as big as Poland and maybe just as skilled/fast. This is where having only 3 Sr's starting may hurt Ferry, I was impressed by Ferry's composure in not panicking against Crestview, even though Crestview presents a different challenge than Poland.

On a side note... So it will be another week where bigreds pride will predict a blowout for Ferry. It's the Ohio playoffs most teams will end up getting blown out sooner than later so even a broken clock will work twice a day. Your just lucky it's not 1960 or you would be forced to move out of Ferry and move back into the drug infested meth village for letting your kid got to that rundown high school that is filled with asbestosis.

I do not believe this will be close but not for a lack of trying. PS played a very good South Range team close a few weeks ago, too big and fast for MF to compete with.

Not a great second round draw for the riders, but far from an unbeatable team as well. Looking through their schedule, the bulldogs seem to play to the level of their competition frequently.

Their wins have not been blowouts, comfortable yes, but the 2 losses on their resume are to very good teams. Canfield, even not being in the playoffs, is a good D3 team. An 8 point loss on the road to possibly the best D5 school in South Range is also a very impressive performance.

I cannot claim to know how the size and athleticism of the two teams compare. I would imagine, simply by the close game with South Range, that Poland has plenty of both of those. Ferry does have great athletes, but their defense will need to be much better than against Crestview to pull out a win.

Ferry will likely be the 4th or 5th best team Poland has played to this point. For Ferry, this will be the best, or second best, they have faced this season. That being said, as pointed out, Ferry showed great composure in a very back and forth game, something which I had questioned if they would do. Question answered in my mind. Ferry will have to play a very clean game, maybe get a few bounces their way, but I do believe they have the ability to pull the upset.

I can agree with that. The aspect that gives me hope is something we have talked about previously… most games being decided before kickoff. I truly believe Ferry is better than what they displayed against StC. That game was over before it started due to the dominance of StC, the fact that even Ferry does not believe they can beat StC and dropping them (haven’t played 7-JV in around 6 years), and comments I heard personally from fans an parents stating “take it easy on us” or something of the sort.

Sometimes, playing an uncommon opponent, even if they are better, is better than a local team.

Someone with much better knowledge maybe can tell me if last weeks win was the first time Ferry beat a higher seeded team in the playoffs? Maybe they did it in 2004?

In 2004 Ferry was a 2 seed, and beat #7 West Muskingum, #3 Bellaire, and #4 New Albany. New Albany beat #1 seed Ironton, so technically they didn’t, although one of their victories did beat the seed higher than Ferry.

Community appears to be land-locked, is aging in place, and had refused to participate in open enrollment. That last may have changed, but a former boss that lived in the district told me they would be dropping way down based on the enrollment projections.
