WHEELING, W.Va.— Wheeling Jesuit University track and field athlete, Stewart Jones, was named the WVIAC Male Track Athlete of the Year as announced by the league’s office on Monday afternoon. Jones earned his second consecutive WVIAC Athlete of the Year honor to go along with back-to-back All-American accolades.
The senior from Weirton, W.Va. garnered wins in the men’s 3,000 meter steeplechase and with 4×400 meter relay team while earning second in the 1,500 meter run at the 2013 WVIAC Championships before finishing eighth in the 3,000m steeple at the 2013 NCAA National Championships. In addition, Jones competed at the 2012 NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships. He earned All-American status with 35th place time of 30:19.
In his final two years of competition, Jones earned three Athlete of the Year accolades, 2011 cross country, 2012 track and 2013 track, while emerging as a 3-time All-American. He set multiple records during the run, and currently holds six WJU standards.
Jones holds the fastest 10k time in Wheeling Jesuit’s cross country history which he set at the 2012 National Championships. For indoor track, Jones set three records. He currently owns the mile run with a time of 4:11.35 (2012), the 3,000m run at 8:18.45 (2013) and the distance medley relay with a 10:02.40 time (2013- Joe Molek, Brandon McKinley, Michael Krempin and Jones). Jones also finished his career with two outdoor records. In 2012, Jones recorded WJU’s fastest 3,000m steeple and 1,500m run with times of 8:56.60 and 3:56.48, respectively.
