Football season has started on the hilltop where the varsity Hilltop Huskies came up with a hard fought 12-7 victory over the visiting Cambridge Bobcats. Since July the Huskies have been preparing hard for the upcoming 2026 season. The kids have fought through the heat, the rain and the demanding practices to prepare themselves for the season ahead.
The field at Sherrard was already saturated from earlier rains. This made for sloppy field conditions for both teams. More rain was forecasted for the afternoon, so getting the complete game in before the storms hit was imperative. Storms did affect the junior varsity game, more on that later.
Paxton Yorko led the way for the Huskies. Yorko not only had a rushing touchdown, he also had a passing touchdown to Maddox Kotson to round out the scoring for the Huskies. With the Bobcats driving late, the Husky defense stood up big. Hilltop stopped Cambridge inside the 20 with under 30 seconds to go with a fourth down stop to end the threat.
Hilltop’s junior varsity got started a little early to try to beat the storms. It was an early defensive battle with a couple of turnover on downs and a turnover recovered by the Huskies before either team was able to get on the board.
Mason Kotson got the scoring started for Hilltop with a short touchdown run. Lincoln Border hit Slaton Pomaranski for the 2 pointer to give the Huskies an 8-0 lead. Early in the second quarter you could almost hear Garth Brooks singing and the thunder rolling in. Not too much after that a downpour started, leaving the teams and fans to scatter for shelter. With no end in sight the game was postponed, a makeup date has yet to be determined.
The Huskies travel to Barnesville next Saturday August 22nd to take on the Shamrocks. Junior Varsity starts the action with a 5:00 kick, followed by the Varsity at 7:00.
