West Liberty’s Harris named to 4th All American list

BEAVERTON, Ore. – West Liberty University senior guard Cedric Harris collected his fourth NCAA Division II All-America honor on Monday when he was a first-team selection on the 23rd annual Division II Bulletin All-America Team.

The Division II Bulletin celebrated its 22nd anniversary as a chronicler of the nation’s NCAA Division II basketball scene this winter. The publication has selected an NCAA Division II All-America Team each year since the 1991-92 season.

A 6-0 senior guard from Zanesville, Ohio, Harris had received first-team All-America honors earlier this month from the NCAA Division II coaches (NABC), the NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors (Daktronics) and Basketball Times magazine.

The 2014 Atlantic Region and Mountain East Conference Player of the Year, Harris led Coach Jim Crutchfield’s Hilltoppers to their fifth straight conference crown as well as their fourth consecutive Atlantic Region title and Elite Eight tournament berth before seeing his career come to an end Saturday with an 84-77 loss to Central Missouri in WLU’s first-ever national championship game appearance.

Harris was the leading scorer (17.8 ppg.) on a Hilltopper team that led the nation in scoring for the eighth time in the past nine years while rolling to its fourth straight 30-win season. He led the MEC in assists (5.5/game) and steals (2.3/game) while ranking among the national leaders in assist/turnover ratio.

Harris, who played one season at Wheeling Jesuit, had 2,235 points and 697 assists in his college career and made a significant impact on the West Liberty record book after leading the Hilltoppers to an NCAA Division II-best 97-9 (.915) record in his three seasons on the hill.

The consensus All-American leaves West Liberty tied with current assistant coach Ben Howlett for 12th place on the school’s career scoring list with 1,663 points. Harris also ranks No. 2 all-time at West Liberty with 533 assists and his 217 steals are fourth.

The West Liberty senior was joined on the Division II Bulletin first team unit by Player of the Year Brandon Jefferson of Metro State along with University of the Sciences junior Garret Kerr and seniors Vincent Bailey (Lincoln Memorial) and Aaron Nelson (Southern Indiana).

Falk was the only Mountain East Conference player named to any of the four Division II Bulletin All-America teams. Charleston senior Xavier Humphrey received honorable mention.
