In one week, the fastest swimmers in West Virginia will be competing at the gorgeous Aquatic Center at Mylan Park, in Morgantown. This facility is the home pool for the Mountaineer’s Swimming and Diving team. This pool produces fast swimmers and fast times. The State Championship meet will take place on Thursday, February 16 and Friday the 17th and you do not want to miss it.
Swimmers from across the state have raced all season to get a coveted spot on the State meet Psyche sheet. This will be the final high school swim for some of the fastest swimmers not only in West Virginia but across the country. West Virginia made up of rolling hills and mountains is the birthplace of a plethora of extremely talented swimmers and athletes.
This year alone, all of the women’s individual events that will be swum have a Division 1 committed athlete in the top seed. Impressive is not a strong enough adjective to explain the level of competition that will be taking place next Thursday and Friday.
Top Seeded individuals for the women who will be vying for the championship will be:
Caroline Riggs from Morgantown will be continuing her swimming career at Yale University. Riggs is an amazing swimmer. Caroline will be competing in the 200 Freestyle and the 100 Breastroke.
Madi McGlothen, another USA Swimming Scholastic All-American, from George Washington will be following her mother’s footsteps by continuing her career at the University of Kentucky. Madi will swim to reclaim her previous titles in both the 200 IM and the 500 Freestyle.
Cadence Vincent from Buckhannon-Upshur, the state record holder in both the 50 and the 100 Freestyle, is committed to The University of Alabama swim program. Cadence will be swimming her signature events the 50 and 100 Freestyle. Don’t leave your seats for these races, Cadence is so fast if you blink you may miss it.
Maddie Foster from Winfield will be racing against Victoria Kidney from John Marshall to reclaim her state title in the 100 Butterfly. Maddie is committed to continue her athletic career at Queens University of Charlotte. The 100 Butterfly will be the closest race of the day with Foster seed time a 56.54 and Kidney’s seed time being 57.58.
Victoria Kidney from John Marshall is committed to swim for West Virginia University. Victoria will be swimming the 100 Backstroke and the 100 Butterfly. Victoria had an extremely successful season. Her backstroke is effortless and beautiful to watch. This will also be an exciting race to watch with Jordan Claypoole from Parkersburg South swimming against Kidney for the title.
You do not want to miss these ladies battle in the water. All of these same swimmers will be joining their teammates on relays to win even more medals.
The Men’s top seeds consist of the following:
Nick Lugo, a junior from Jefferson, will be competing for the 200 Freestyle and the 100 Butterfly. Nick is a very talented swimmer and will be coming back next year.
Bradley Boyd from Hurricane will be continuing to swim and study at the University of Kentucky. Bradley will be competing in the 200 IM and the 100 Backstroke. Being able to compete at the top level in the individual medley demonstrates what a versatile swimmer Boyd is.
Isaac Anger a sophomore from Elkins will be competing in the 50 Freestyle and the 100 Breaststroke. He will be providing spectators with exciting races to watch at States and in the future.
Abram Bias from Winfield who is also a member of the track team and marching band is committed to Frostburg State University. Abram will be competing for the title in the 100 Freestyle.
Kenneth McGlothen from George Washington, twin brother of Madi McGlothen, will also be swimming for the title in the 500 Freestyle. Athleticism runs strong in this family. Kenneth will put up an impressive time at States.
These swimmers are top notch. Both academically and athletically they have excelled and most will be continuing their swimming careers. West Virginia should be extremely proud of the caliber of athletes that will competing at the WV State Championship meet. Records will be broken, medals will be awarded, and memories will be made.
