Lexington, VA. – Day two of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Women’s Golf Spring Classic was played Sunday as the teams competed in the final 18 holes. The Wheeling University Women’s Golf team dropped one spot from their day one final, finishing third among the seven teams in attendance with a score of 658 for the two rounds. All five Cardinal golfers finished at 86 strokes or better, with all five cracking the top 20 of the event.

Leading the way once again for the Cardinals was senior Emily Holzopfel, who for the second day in a row finished under the 80 stroke mark. She dropped out of first place for the tournament, finishing second overall, and shot a 78 for the second day. The front nine was once again her best showing as she was the picture of consistency with seven straight pars to start the day. A bogey on hole eight was her only blemish as she rounded things out with a par on hole nine to finish at +1. However, the back nine saw her struggle a little bit, with a pair of double bogeys, but she still finished strong with six pars on the nine holes, finishing with a +5. For her efforts, Holzopfel was named a First Team All-MEC player for the second year in a row as she finished with a combined score of 152.

The biggest improvement on day two for the Cardinals came courtesy of Nicole Lincicome. After shooting a 90 on day one, the sophomore bounced back with a ten stroke improvement to finish with an 80 on the day. Lincicome was the other Cardinal Women’s Golfer to earn All-MEC honors, being named an All-MEC Honorable Mention player for the second time in her career. She shot a +1 on the front nine, using birdies on holes seven and eight to get her score back in check. Freshman Ella Keffer was right behind her, finishing what was her best tournament with a combined score of 166. After shooting a career best 81 on the first day, Keffer came back with another strong showing, shooting an 85 on day two. She finished 12th overall in the field and picked up her top individual finish.

Marra Johnson and Kylee Tolliver, who each cracked the event’s top 20. Both golfers finished with identical 173 scores and both finished at 86 for the final 18 holes of play. Tolliver’s best showing eas on the front nine, where she picked up her only Birdie of the day and finished at +6. For Johnson, she also finished with a +6 for the front nine, finishing with five pars on the nine holes. The Wheeling Women’s Golf team had multiple All-MEC award honored for the second year in a row, and finished out their spring golf schedule on a high note.

The Wheeling Women’s Golf team will now wait to see if any Cardinals qualify for the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships.
