Waynesburg University to Host 2011 PAC NCAA D3 Wrestling Championships

WEXFORD, Pa. – The 2011 Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Wrestling Championships will take place at the Rudy Marisa Gymnasium on the campus of Waynesburg University in Waynesburg, Pa., this Friday, February 11, 2011, beginning at 5 p.m.

The Waynesburg Yellow Jackets will be looking to defend their PAC wrestling title after edging perennial PAC power Thiel in the 2010 PAC Championships last year. Third-year Yellow Jacket mentor Ron Headlee, the 2010 PAC Coach of the Year, will have his squad primed to defend its crown. Waynesburg had seven different wrestlers earn PAC Wrestler of the Week honors in 2010-11 and are 2-0 in conference dual meet action. Waynesburg is led by the 2010 PAC Most Outstanding Wrestler and defending champion at 125 pounds, sophomore Alex Crown and freshman 149-pounder Luke Lohr, the PAC Wrestler of the Week for the week ending January 18.

Thiel head coach Craig Thurber will look to take back the wrestling title this year after dominating the sport in the conference over the past two decades. Prior to Waynesburg taking the title last year, the Tomcats had won 10 consecutive league titles (2000-09). Thiel will be led by defending champion at 133 pounds, two-time All-American junior Corey Brown and junior 165-pounder Matt Lowry, who was the 2010 PAC champion at 149 pounds.

For W&J, head coach Jay Robison and his squad enter the championship looking for their first conference team title since 1999. The Presidents will be led by the defending champion at 197 pounds, sophomore Robbie Mies, and freshman 165-pounder David Dibenedetto, the PAC Wrestler of the Week for the week ending November 22.

This year’s meet is the 52nd Annual PAC Wrestling Championship, but this will be the first year that the Championships will be broadcast live via video webcast. Waynesburg will be conducting the webcast via campus television station WCTV-TV. Links to the free video webcast will be available on the PAC website at www.pacathletics.org.

Admission to all PAC Championship contests is $5 for adults, $2 for students and $1 for programs. No institutional or conference passes are accepted at PAC Championship events.
