WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Washington & Jefferson College baseball lost both games of a doubleheader to Southern Maine on Friday at Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven.

W&J dropped an 8-2 decision in game one and then suffered a tough 4-3 loss following walk-off single. The Presidents finished their 2011 RussMatt Central Florida Invitational schedule 2-5. W&J (3-6) resumes its schedule in Pennsylvania Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader against Geneva at Ross Memorial Park. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.

W&J senior pitcher Jordan Zivoder (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush), the Presidents’ Athletic Conference’s Pitcher of the Week, put together another solid outing in the late game. Zivoder (1-2) took the loss after he threw 6 2/3 innings and allowed two earned runs, while striking out eight.

The Presidents owned a 3-1 lead heading into the seventh inning before Southern Maine pushed across three runs, including a two RBI walk-off single from senior Josh Mackey, to win the game.

Five different Presidents recorded a hit in the contest. W&J jumped on the Huskies early, manufacturing runs in the first two innings. The Red & Black plated one run in the top of the seventh thanks to a sacrifice fly from senior shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz (Medina, Ohio/Hoban) that scored freshman right fielder Josh Staniscia (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional).

Staniscia extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single to lead off the inning in addition to a pair of hits in the first game. Bogdewiecz also had two hits to lead W&J in the first game. Junior pitcher Dave Trushel (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) started the opening game and took the loss after allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits in four innings.

Freshman Eddie Nogay (Weirton, W.Va./Madonna)  pitched three no-hit innings in relief, striking out two and allowing just two batters to reach base on a walk and a hit by pitch.

Southern Maine sophomore Chris Bernard went all seven innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and striking out five to earn the victory.

The Presidents fell behind early in game one after the Huskies exploded for five runs on four hits in the third inning. Southern Maine added to its lead in the fourth, pounding out four hits and scoring three runs.

W&J got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when freshman first baseman D.J. Michalski (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) led off the inning with a blooper to center field in which he hustled into a double. Junior second baseman Aaron Klinec (North Olmsted, Ohio/St. Ignatius) drove in Michalski with a double off the left field fence. Staniscia then drove in Klinec with a single to center.

W&J also hosts Marietta next Thursday for a 6:00 pm game at Ross Memorial Park before beginning PAC play with an Apr. 2 doubleheader at Saint Vincent (1:00 pm).
