Philippi -On Tuesday evening, the Wheeling Jesuit softball team split a conference doubleheader with Alderson-Broaddus College, dropping the first game 3-2 and taking game two by a score of 8-0.

Alderson-Broaddus retired the first two WJU batters when Erika Jusko blasted a double followed by an RBI single from Jaime Donato for an early 1-0 Lady Cards advantage. The Battlers retaliated with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on three hits and a walk.

In the second inning, Jusko sent the ball sailing out of the yard, tying the game 2-2, and the pitchers’ dual began. Wheeling Jesuit pitcher, Ashley Nichols, kept the Battler line-up in check for the next three innings as she retired 8-of-13 hitters, allowing only two hits, recording three strike outs, and handing out three free passes.

On the other hand, Alderson-Broaddus pitcher, Kat Powell, limited the Lady Cards to just four hits, and broke the tie with a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth which was enough to secure the 3-2 victory.

In the nightcap, the Lady Cards bounced back with an 8-0 victory. Nichols threw five shutout innings, only allowing two hits and four runners to reach base. The Wheeling Jesuit ace added six strike outs.

Wheeling Jesuit scored two runs in the third inning as Jusko, Donato, and Caity Ferrell recorded back-to-back-to-back hits. Jusko and Donato peppered the left-center gap with singles while Ferrel used center field for her single and collected an RBI.

After a quick fourth inning, WJU exploded for six runs in the fifth. Ferrell and Oliva Wamsley were the first two to reach base, watching four pitches. Shaynna Johnson followed, reaching on a fielder’s choice as the Battlers attempted to cut down the lead runner, and Ferrell scored on an error by the third baseman.

A wild pitch sent Wamsley to third and Johnson to second while another walk loaded the bases. Next, Katie Lucas reached on a fielder’s choice and recorded an RBI, and bases still full. Lead-off hitter, Samantha Macioce, cleared the bases with on swing of the bat, collecting four RBI and her first grandslam, giving the Lady Cardinal an 8-0 advantage.
