MORGANTOWN, W.Va.– The West Virginia University baseball team will play in its final non-conference game of the season when the Mountaineers travel to Akron on Tuesday, May 10. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
West Virginia (27-19, 13-8) most recently took two of three games from BIG EAST foe Cincinnati last weekend. The Mountaineers and Bearcats split a doubleheader on Saturday with West Virginia dropping game one 9-4 and then winning game two 11-4. In the series finale the Mountaineers had a nine-run first inning and won the game 14-7.
As a team West Virginia is batting .304 and the pitching staff has an earned-run average (ERA) of 4.92, compared to opponents batting .276 and opponent pitching carrying a 5.28 ERA.
Redshirt senior shortstop Grant Buckner has reached base in 40 straight games and 45 of the season’s 46 games. Buckner is leading the team in batting average (.371), runs (41), hits (63), doubles (13), home runs (7), RBIs (44) and walks (17). Redshirt senior designated hitter Jeremy Gum (.349), sophomore right fielder Brady Wilson (.339) and redshirt junior second baseman Dan DiBartolomeo (.326) are all batting above .300.
Akron comes into the game with a 12-33 record and is led by Drew Turocy, who leads the team in most offensive categories. Turocy has a .351 batting average, 31 runs, 12 doubles, five triples, six home runs and 24 RBIs. The squad is batting .232, while the pitching staff has a 4.59 ERA.
Freshman right-hander Jon Pusateri will get the start for the Zips with a record of 2-3 in seven starts and 11 appearances. Pusateri carries a 4.76 ERA and has struck out 31, while walking nine.
Last weekend, Akron dropped two of three to Bowling Green. Akron fell in games one (6-5) and three (5-1), while winning game two 7-6.
The game will be played at Canal Park, the home of the Akron Aeros, the Double A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians.
