PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates offered arbitration to first baseman Derrek Lee prior to the midnight deadline on Wednesday. They declined to offer arbitration to outfielder Ryan Ludwick and catcher Chris Snyder.
Lee has until December 7th at midnight to accept or decline arbitration from the Pirates. If Lee rejects, the Pirates will receive a compensation draft pick between the first and second round in the 2012 draft.
Lee batted .337 with two doubles, a triple, seven home runs and 18 RBI in 28 games with Pittsburgh in 2011.
By declining to offer arbitration to both Ludwick and Snyder, the Pirates miss out on two compensation draft picks. However, if either player accepted then Pittsburgh would have them for a one-year deal in 2012. Neither player fit in the plans for next season.
The Pirates already got a compensation draft pick when catcher Ryan Doumit signed with the Minnesota Twins. Doumit was also a type B free agent.
