Pride,
Mark could probably comment on this more than anybody but as much as you would like to see Payton return, I can't see it. He's on a state championship caliber (every year) football team and he's running in the state championships in track. He's doing well at Central.
As for the starting positions can be won in the winter when kids don't show up to lifting: I agree to an extent however you have kids that show up and work their butts off that deserve a chance on the field. Lifting is only half the battle. Remember Mike Mamula was an NFL Combine All Pro and was a bust in the NFL. Just because you can lift doesn't mean you also know how to play football. I'll take a strong intelligent kid over a stronger kid anyday. Sports intelligence is often overlooked. Got to have kids who just know how to play football.

FirstWard,
I said a strong intelligent kid over a stronger kid. Meaning, just because you lift doesn't make you good at football. You need football smart kids on the field even if they may not be 6'2'' or extremely strong.
Bwana,
At some point is it because Shadyside is in their heads? Scheme? Got pushed around but I think there is more to it than that.

I agree that Shadyside had the mental edge in that game, it was obvious even before kickoff. The vast majority of the Bellaire players are exceptional students. They are lifting 4-6 times weekly and getting stronger, much stronger. The big but is, if not put in the position to win it is difficult to win. The first Ferry game is the perfect example.
