Hypothetically, according to my conversation with the WVSSAC, yes.
You have to do is have a 2.0 GPA, with no requirement for a # of classes in a day, or semester."Failure gave me Strength... Pain was my Motivation" - Michael Jordan

So then if the school offers weighted and non- weighted courses, a student athlete can essentially take one or two weighted or non-weighted courses for the that specific quarter to cover his eligibility in that particular sport?

You are right in the fact that you could ONLY take gym. But schools in WV require 4 years of english, math, science and social studies to graduate. So a students would have to double up early in his career to meet those requirements. Take Wetzel County as an example. You need 28 credits to graduate and there are only 8 periods in a day, so at the minumum you would have 4 classes your senior year. There are no study halls.

Manowar--maybe if you OH guys would have had to maintain a 2.0 rather than slouching off with a 1.0, you could find some of these things on-line yourself LOL:
WVSSAC Handbook
§127-2-6. Scholarship.
6.1. A student is required to be enrolled in the equivalent of at least 20 periods (four subjects with full credit toward graduation) per week.
6.1.1. A semester course that constitutes 8100 minutes of instruction (block schedule) will count as two subjects.
6.1.2. The student may select four full credits from any area of the curriculum offered by the school.
6.1.3. If a student is taking a multiple period subject, such as block or vocational courses for a full morning or afternoon, it may be counted as more than one subject. The number of subjects counted will be equal to the units of full credits given.
6.1.4. If a student has been declared ineligible according to the standards outlined above, the student may attend summer school and have eligibility reinstated if the student meets the standards at the conclusion of summer school.
6.1.5. If a student has been declared ineligible according to the standards outlined above, the student may have eligibility reinstated at midsemester if the student is meeting the standards at that time.
6.2. Note: Full credit is defined as one-half credit for a semester or 4050 minutes as provided by West Virginia Board of Education §126-42-1 et seq., “Assuring the Quality of Education: Regulations for Education Programs” (Policy 2510).
6.3. Schools providing for planned programs of independent learning during the regular school term may wish not to require all students to attend classes for 4050 minutes during a semester. In such instances, full credit may be awarded for satisfactory performance provided that it meets standards established by the
county and West Virginia Department of Education.
6.4. Full credit may be awarded for subjects in addition to those offered by the school as well as experimental programs developed by the school itself provided that it meets standards established by the county and West Virginia Department of Education.
6.5. A student not attempting four (4) full credit subjects during a semester must complete one 9 weeks of school work to regain consideration for eligibility.
6.6. Any student who withdraws from school and does not re-enroll within 10 school days of that withdrawal date will lose eligibility for the remainder of that semester.
6.7. Credit deficiencies cannot be made up after the last day of the semester, except in a case where a student whose final examinations and course credit are delayed due to illness which can be verified by aphysician or as established by local Board of Education Policy.
6.8. The official school transcript will be used to determine a student’s eligibility and will be regarded as final.
6.9. In accordance with §126CSR26 West Virginia Board of Education Policy 2436.10, Participation in Extracurricular Activities (C-Rule), students must maintain a 2.0 average to participate in interscholastic athletics.
I urge you to ask your local school board to adopt the WV rule.Last edited by Ironmike; 02-22-2010, 03:23 PM.

I know that during the season they have their eligibility checked every friday.
BTW, that WVSSAC website is horrible. So once again Ohio beat WV! ha ha
That website is terrible. I cant believe that they dont have State Records listed.
About 8 months ago I called the WVSSAC asking if they could mail or email of all their state football records, and they said, quote, "we do not have record of them", and instructed me to call some journalist from Charleston."Failure gave me Strength... Pain was my Motivation" - Michael Jordan

Conclusions from this brilliant web discussion:
1.Ohio requires less than a 1.0 GPA to play sports for its high school athletes (you can have 5 subjects where you get a "D" and two where you get an "F" and still play!)
2. West Virginia requires at least a 2.0 GPA OVERALL for its high school athletes to participate.

HAHAHA im sorrynot really), but im about to burst you bubble.
They must not work on reading comprehension in WV because everybody has said on here, if you have 2 Fs on your report card, no matter even if all of your other grades are As, you are athletically ineligible. This means you can only have 1 F, not 2.
Next topic,
In ohio, association guidelines recommend that individual schools shouldset their own GPA requirements. In only four states did all high schools in the state follow the rules specifically setup for academic eligibility by the state associations
This goes with just about everybody from an Ohio high school on here has said. That there school requires a 2.0GPA. That also explains why the OHSAA has it stated as a "passing grade" because it is up to the schools to set the requirements.
Oh yeah, here's my source: http://www.thesportjournal.org/artic...n-high-schools
From Legislative Rule, West Virginia Board of Education. Series 26. Participation in Extracurricular Activities:
f. If a student does not earn a 2.0 average by the end of the second semester, he or she may attend summer school to raise the GPA so that he or she is eligible for participation at the beginning of the next school year. For purposes of computing the GPA after summer school, all of the student's grades from the second semester plus his or her grade from the summer school will be used to determine the GPA.
I have never heard of this being done in Ohio, looks like WV is a little softer on the eligibility rules in Ohio.
Also, in West Virginia, you can still play if you miss a day of school as long as you are granted permission by administration. In Ohio, if you miss, you cannot play bottom line.
So after all of that, this thread= failure. Have a good day.

Nice try--but you fail. Pointing out that a WV athlete can attend summer school to RAISE his/her gpa to a 2.0 does NOT help your argument. It still means no sports until your GPA is a "C" average.
Ohio cannot say the same. It lets "football schools" lower the bar locally to make sure their best athletes can fill the stands even though they have only a "D" average.

Show me a school that has their GPA eligibility set at 1.0. Even the guys from Steubenville said theirs is 2.0.
